The Columbarium
at Saint Peter's Church

In ages past the church provided resting-places for the dead in or around local buildings of worship, a continuing witness thereby of the risen life. The Columbarium at Saint Peter's Church reclaims this ancient practice and with it the spirit of dignity and reverence for loved ones at rest within the communion of saints.

A columbarium (from columba, "dove", meaning a series of recessed niches to receive inurned cremains) usually is set aside out of sight in a garden or building. A distinctive characteristic of this sacred facility is location. Our columbarium is placed in the vestibule off the Sacristy Garden, literally in the heart of the parish.

Take time now to bring peace of mind to yourself and loved ones. Write an e-mail (see below) or call the parish office today to request more information or to make an appointment with a Columbarium representative.

May their souls and the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God in Christ Jesus, rest in peace.

Facts About Cremation

An Upward Trend
Between 1876 and 1884, only 28 formally recorded cremations occurred in the U. S. Nearly one century later, in 1977, only 7% of all human corpses were disposed of by cremation. Suddenly, the number of cremations across the nation more than doubled, rising steadily to a 1993 level of nearly 20%.

By 1997 a trend toward popular acceptance in the U. S. was evident. A state-by-state study that year revealed in Arizona 53.8% of deaths resulted in cremation, in California 44.6, in Florida 40.7, in Maine 43.5, in New York 18.02, in Pennsylvania 14.8, in Rhode Island 26.1, in Vermont 43.6, in Washington 54.3.

Thinking About the End
In a 1971 Psychology Today survey of 30,000 readers (Shneidman 1971) 31% of respondents chose cremation, 32% would donate their bodies to science, 22% chose burial, and 16% were indifferent.

Purpose
This sacred facility serves the faith community of Saint Peter's Church and the spiritual needs of the communities in which we live.
